Today was our last day at the Morning Star guest house in Mirissaβ€”a nice, quiet place to spend a few days.

We started off the day with the usual breakfast and enjoyed the view.

We spent the morning at the beach, where dense groves of coconut palms lean precariously over the sand. We could see Parrot Rock, the defining landmark of Mirissa, rising out of the water just off the main beach.

It was possible to wade or swim to Parrot Rock from the beach. Steps cut into the rock lead up to a small plateau at the top, offering a near-360Β° view of the ocean, the bay, and the palm-fringed coastline.

Later in the day, we went to Matara to take the train back to Colombo. The tracks hug the coastline almost all the way to Colombo, with the ocean visible on one side for much of the route. It was not as crowded this time, and the journey was comfortable.

We reached Colombo and checked in to City Beds-The Regent, which was very close to the Secretariat Halt station. We went for a short walk and saw the Presidential Secretariat (Old Parliament Building) nearby.
